Number Ranges:
It is a two character code used to specify a number interval from which document numbers are selected or entered
Document number ranges is defined at in the document type. Document type is at the header part level and servers many purpose. It defines the number range in the documents and manages the type of accounts that can be posted to asset, vendor and customer. Document type defined at client level and one document type can be used in many company code.
Number ranges two types, internal number range and external number range
Inter number range, system automatically pick serial wise.
External number manual we can give any number between the number rage from and to.
The number range which are in use of internal status we can convert to External number range.
Example: For document type DR Number range assigned N2 range given maintained in FBN1 from number 1800 and to number 1899. Current number status 1850. Now user want to covert to external number range from 1851 to 1899.
We cannot maintain number ranges in a financial twice, system will give number range overlapped
Example: DR Number N2 range 1800 to 1899 maintained 2014 for company code ABC and for this company in mid of financial year total numbers utilized. Now user cannot extend 1900 to 1999 for N2 number range for 2014. System will give number range overlapped.
We cannot change like that:
Because the same number range used in another company code
One number ranges interval for one financial year.
If we want to change number range 1900 to 1999 first we have to change the number range at Document type DR from N2 to N3 (new range). Maintain new range for all company codes which is using Document type DR and number range N2.
We can maintain number ranges at company code level in FBN1 and SNRO
