Subreport formatting is lost in parent report

I created a report and I'm using it as a subreport in another report. 

In my "subreport" report I set the font color on some text just to make it easier to see things while I develop this.  I notice that when I run the "parent" report, the font color in that "subreport" is the generic default black.

Am I missing something obvious here?
